Emerson String Quartet, “#6 in G 1. Allegretto” Shostakovich: Complete String Quartets (2000)
I saw the Emerson String Quartet at Carnegie Hall this past weekend. Carnegie is a bit too big for a quartet, but the ambition of four individuals trying to fill such a place is probably more inspiring than the music they can play there, so it was fine. Highlight of the set was the Debussy String Quartet in G. I prefer their darker and less exuberant recordings, their Bartok and Shostakovich quartets specifically, but those don’t seem to be on their set lists this year, so you take what you can get.
I know few people I can talk to about this string quartets, so if you want anything by the Emerson String Quartet, just email me. I have their complete quartets of Shostakovich, Bartok, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Haydn, Webern, and Dvorak. That sentence just reminded me that I forgot to put some pipe tobacco in the mail for someone, so I’ll be at the post office anyway.
