Widmark stars in one of my favorite movies, the hyper-noir pickpocket film, Pickup on South Street. His character is coldly narcissistic and effortlessly lovable. There’s a scene where the chief of police is trying to put Widmark’s character away for life. Chief says something wise. Widmark says something so fast you see the Chief’s face wince, fully confounded, and for the next few seconds it looks like the Chief is hastily dotting the t’s and crossing the i’s of something he can’t remember saying.

I’ve never seen another Widmark film. Looks like I’ve got weekend plans.
