Benefits of Strategic Recovery

oats:

After nine days of not lifting weights, I had an amazing workout yesterday. I can tell because my upper body is fantastically sore, and my legs were cramping as I woke up.  (OK, maybe I need to go a little easier on the bike…)

Strategic Recovery, in the context of the Hypertrophy-Specific Training method, means that we take time off to let our bodies recover and “slack off.” So for me it is six weeks on, one week off.

Game on!

I can put up unbelievable weight on 4-6 days off. The muscle memory is there, but the break-down and repair is not. So of course I get really sore the next day, because I almost always overwork those muscles, feeling like Superman. Nice to know the “slacking off” is sensible, and part of a healthy routine.
