Helen Frankenthaler, 1928-2011
I’ve included a scanned image from a page of Frank O’Hara’s What’s With Modern Art? (lent kindly to me by JDS long ago) where in Frank reviews Helen’s work in 1954:
“In all the paintings there is an original use of the artistic temper, a disdain of appearances, and sometimes a private unpleasantness of tenor which is made beautiful by its unimpeded self-assertion - which is to say that then the artist disappears and we have a fact of experience.”
What a loss we’ve suffered today. She has long been one of my favorites. Her work swallows you whole in a way that is so desirable. Just paint, just the fuzzy barrier between pools of color. Still but kinetic. Powerful but not aggressive. Just this slow pull forward and inward, as though her work had its own center of gravity deep within galaxies of pigment.
